Animal Assisted Therapy

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) involves the use of trained animals to assist individuals with various physical, emotional, or cognitive issues. In AAT sessions, animals are integrated into therapeutic activities to achieve specific therapeutic goals under the guidance of the Recreational Therapist. At ThRive we currently have Bowie the labradoodle providing Pet Therapy as he undergoes certification for AAT.

The benefits of animal-assisted therapy are numerous:

  1. Emotional and psychological well-being: Interacting with animals can reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and feelings of loneliness. The presence of animals often promotes feelings of comfort, joy, and relaxation.

  2. Socialization: AAT can encourage social interaction and communication skills, particularly in individuals who may be withdrawn or have difficulty connecting with others. Animals can serve as a bridge for forming connections with both animals and people.

  3. Physical health: The physical presence of animals can have positive effects on physical health, such as lowering blood pressure and heart rate. Additionally, activities such as walking, grooming, or playing with animals can promote physical activity and mobility.

  4. Cognitive benefits: Interacting with animals can stimulate cognitive function, including attention, memory, and problem-solving skills. For example, caring for and training animals can improve concentration and cognitive flexibility.

  5. Mood enhancement: The companionship of animals can elevate mood and increase feelings of happiness and well-being. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing mood disorders or undergoing stressful situations.

  6. Motivation and engagement: Incorporating animals into therapy sessions can increase motivation and engagement in therapeutic activities, as individuals may be more willing to participate in activities that involve animals.

  7. Empathy and emotional awareness: Interacting with animals can foster empathy, compassion, and emotional awareness, as individuals learn to understand and respond to the needs and emotions of the animals they interact with.
